Stick Welding: Stick welding, also know as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is an electric arc process that uses a consumable flux-coated rod as the electrode and the filler metal. Required equipment is a constant-current welding power source, electrode cable with electrode holder, and ground cable with ground clamp. Welding begins by striking the welding rod on the metal to be welded, with a motion similar to lighting a match. Once the arc starts, you then move the rod in the direction you want to travel. When the rod has consumed from it's starting length of 14" down to about 3", pull the rod away to stop the weld. Replace the remaining stub with a new rod, and start the process all over by striking the new rod. Stick welding remains a popular welding process, and is well suited to welding outdoors and in instances where welding must take place at distances up to several hundred feet from the power source.

Advantages of Stick Welding

  • Relatively inexpensive equipment
  • Easy to change electrode size and type
  • No shielding gas required
  • Easy to extend the "reach" of the process by adding extension cables

Common uses of Stick Welding:

  • Farm and Ranch
  • Equipment repair
  • Bridge and Structural Steel
  • Construction
